CITY OK ON GALLO MONEY GRAB

Friends, you can make up your own minds.  The City of Modesto has no money for better roads, no money for more cops or firefighters, no money for a safe overpass for the children of Enochs High, no money for drainage or lights or sidewalks for Pelendale, BUT PLENTY OF MONEY FOR THEIR FRIENDS AT THE GALLO PERFORMING ARTS CENTER.

I trust you will now vote "NO!!" on Measure K, and every other tax hike or thieving idea they have.

If you agree that they always have money for their friends wants, but never money for OUR NEEDS, please send this BEE article to every friend, especially voting friends, you have.  Thank you very much,  Dave

Committee OKS Gallo money, but not amount

By ADAM ASHTON

A Modesto City Council committee agreed to look into giving money to the The Gallo Center for the Arts, but without taking case from city services.

The finance committee voted 2-1 to contribute to the $47.5 million project, but not from the general fund. The bulk of that account pays for police and fire services. The committee didn't specify an amount.

Committee members Brad Hawn and Bob Dunbar voted in favor of the proposal. Councilwoman Kristin Olsen opposed it, saying she wanted to make sure the city didn't take divert money from capital improvements to the center.

The committee will meet next month to talk about figures and sources for the money.

In a letter last week to Hawn, Fred Silva, chairman of the center's board of directors, asked the city for $5 million to $10 million.

He said the money is needed to pay off the $12 million remaining in a $14 million bond issue used to start construction.

Councilman Garrad Marsh urged the committee to contribute. "I know if we wre to invest in the Gallo center, we would be much better off in the future. It's just too far into the future for people to realize," he said.

Silva told the committee that he wasn't trying to pressure members. "We believe this is an opportunity for the city to become involved if the city feels it can do it."

Read how the Gallo Performing Arts Center is already doomed. We certainly do not want to invest our tax dollars here.

GALLOS SHOULD PAY FOR THEIR OWN CENTER

Everytime my wife and I drive by the Gallo Center for the Arts, we have a ritual where we curse the plumbing. From the very start, the Gallo family has tried to extort money from the taxpayers, to fund their oppulent dreams of having a performing arts center named after themselves downtown.

As a result, Stanislaus County sold it's tobacco tax revenue, which was supposed to be spent on healthcare for the needy, in order to come up with $15 Million to donate to the project. Ever since, we have seen our health care clinics close one after another throughout Stanislaus County for lack of funds.

Former Mayor Carmen Sabatino was approached by Ray Simon, and Reagan Wilson at the time to also come up with $15 Million ot the taxpayers money. When Mayor Sabatino informed them that Modesto did not have the money in it's budget to give away, Simon and Wilson offered for Stanislaus County to pay the interest on the $15 million until Modesto could come up with the money, if Modesto would just agree to come on board. Mayor Sabatino held firm, and Modesto did not agree to gift $15 Million of the taxpayers money that should be spent on essential public services. Modesto eventually paid approximately $ 1 Million dollars to complete street improvements in front of the Gallo Center.

Now the Gallo Center, wallowing in debt and cost over-runs, is asking Modesto to donate $5 Million to $10 Million of our tax dollars to finish their project. This is money that Modesto simply does not have. Modesto had to dip into it's reserves deeply in order to balance it's current budget. Where the heck does the Gallo family think Modesto is going to come up with this sort of cash? I think it is inappropriate for any of our tax dollars to be spent for this private project. The Gallo family certainly has the resources to pay for their own project. The private donors to this project, who will be the ones that actually use this project, should be responsible for it's construction. The vast majority of Modestan's will never step foot into the facility. We have a very low ratio of law enforcement personnel per thousand population. This issue needs attention, not the fluff fluff project downtown that is having financial problems.

I urge the Modesto City Council to put the residents of Modesto first, and to reject any further public financing of the Gallo Center. You have the responsibility to spend our money wisely. It is never wise to finance oppulent private projects with tax payers money. Hire those law enforcement and fire department personnel, fix our roads, and do the other essential things that will make Modesto a better place to live.                                Administrator

Interesting reading on how Mike Zagaris was subsidized by the city in order to get rid of the shacks that he had owned for decades.
