Dear Editor, I could not believe the hypocrisy reported in today’s BEE. Councilman Will O’Bryant criticizes a private sector firm, saying “Making large amounts of money on the backs of seniors just because they can is criminal.” Janice Keating, Brad Hawn and Bob Dunbar, by their quotes in the BEE story, agree. The truth is that these same council people are ever so willing to triple these same senior’s water rates, quadruple these same senior’s sewer rates, and similarly increase their utility taxes! They admit that they made a $26 Million dollar profit on last year’s water rates. Keating promised to put a cap on utility taxes, because increasing utility rates also increases utility taxes. She was obviously talking through her hat; the cap never happened. Keating thumped the table, demanding that City Manager Britton hire a “utility fund guru” because of the obvious misuse of utility funds, and mismanagement of utility systems. Talking through her hat again? Well, there is no utility fund guru, and the council itself criticizes the city’s utilities as “falling apart”. But then, Keating also promised the Sylvan School Board that the roads to Enochs High School would be completed prior to opening in 2006. She not only talked through her hat again, she voted to defer the student’s safe overpass for a year. Thank you, Dave Thomas, Modesto. 577-4373
