Seldom do I have any praise for our current Modesto City Council, but I must commend them for supporting Rent Control in the mobile home parks. The demographics discussed at the City Council meeting showed a huge percentage of the occupants earning $20,000 or less per year, and on fixed incomes. To do nothing would assure a terrible situation in our community. Couple this with the recent $2.00 per hour rate for the Senior Citizens Center, and I can clearly see that the seniors in our community are gaining some respect from our elected leaders. It surprised me that Janice Keating reluctantly voted in favor of rent control. Despite her big real estate ties, she has a heart after all. The lone vote against rent control came from Kristen Olsen, who is married to a real estate agent, and is the youngest member of the Modesto City Council. She was tempted to vote for rent control, but in the end sided with the real estate view on this issue. Some fine day she will find herself up for re-election, and this issue might lose her support from a block of voters that have some clout. Most of us grow old some day, as will Kristen Olsen. I hope that she learns to be more supportive of this precious and vulnerable segment of our population. Seniors deserve all the help, love, and respect that we as a society can provide. Tux
