After attending tonights meeting on the proposed budget cuts for Modesto City Schools, I came away with the impression that this situation could be made much easier by simply asking the Teachers Union to vote on rolling back the $7 Million dollar raise that was enacted last month. There seems to be support amongst the teachers in attendance to accept such a drastic measure in order to provide for the greater good of the students needs.By doing so, many of the drastic measures could be avoided, and most of the loss of jobs could be made unnecessary. It is important to maintain the Kindergarten teacher to student ratio, retain our school nurses, and support the music programs offered at all levels of school in Modesto. At $10,000.00 per student that is currently available, our public school system is struggling to provide an adequate education for our children. The private schools in our city are able to do a marvelous job with far less money. What is wrong is that far too much money is spent on administrative positions, and fancy buildings, rather than providing an excellent education. I suggest that most of the cuts should be made at the top. The students would not even notice the difference, and huge sums of money would be available for the teachers that are actually doing the job of teaching our children. Tux
