Read how the Gallo Performing Arts Center is already doomed. We certainly do not want to invest our tax dollars here.

Jeff, the headline of your story, today, was one of the best I have seen in the BEE, ever.

I have read the letter sent to Brad Hawn by the PAC people, and it is actually quite informative.  I cannot imagine a rational city Council person wanting to gift the doomed PAC any money.  If you do the math, you can see that it will never crack the financial nut required to sustain itself.

But, even more to the point, they built the building with out raising the required money, and they will not receive the last $10 Million from donations.  My benchmark is that, if an enterprise needs to be subsidized, it has failed.   The PAC has already failed, and they are bleeding, in pain, and hoping against hope that at least 4 friends on the Council will want to bandage the wound.

Of course, you and I can count at least 4 votes fitting the last sentence.

Just do the numbers.  According to the letter, the budget for the PAC is $4,800,000 annually.  (That of course, is low…  They will find more expenses later.)  Divide by 360 days in the year, and get $13,333.   Divide that by 1200 seats, and you get $11.11 a ticket, every day of the year for every seat in the big house.  Or, multiply $13,333 by 7 and get $93,331.  Divide by 1200 seats and get $77.78 per seat for one performance a week.

BUT, the PAC has only 65 performers scheduled, and 85 performances scheduled for the first year – at least that is what the BEE reported some months ago.  Do the math; they will have to sell out the big house 85 times at an average of $47.06 per seat, for every performance.  That means 102,000 seats sold every year.  What are the odds?

It was a very good article.   We shall see if 4 of the council people read it.  Dave

PS  I forgot to factor in the Foundation.  It will provide about $1.04 per seat per day.   Just want to be fair.  Dave
